Spiegel: America forgets about sanctions when it suits them
Under pressure from the United States, the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia, and European companies have therefore lost large contracts, while US companies increased their trade with the Russian Federation, according to the German magazine “Der Spiegel”.
The authors of article reminds that Texas company Bell signed a license agreement with the Urals factory for Civil Aviation, a part of the state concern Rosteh, headed by Sergey Chemezov. Both Rosteh and Chemezov are listed on the US list of people and companies under sanctions. However, for the Bell company, specialized in the production of helicopters, it obviously has not changed plans. On the other hand, German software company SAP, has abandoned cooperation with Russian clients for political reasons. That caused damage for the Russian companies such as Rosneft and Transneft.
In words of Der Spiegel, many EU countries such as Greece, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary, are questioning sanctions. German businessmen are also skeptical about the benefits of sanctions.
“Americans made major pressure against Europe with the aim of imposing the List”, said Frank Schauff, head of the Association of European Business in Russia. “However, what is peculiarly interesting, their amount of trade with Moscow has increased from last year.”
Washington imposed sanctions without any problems because the share of Russia in the US foreign trade is only 3.7%. At the same time, the amount of foreign trade between the EU and Russia declined by a third. “US sanctions are relating to the areas in which the earlier trade exchange was insignificant, such as the war industry”, points the president of American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, Alexis Rodzianko.
German journalists quote few examples of successful cooperation between Russian and US companies. For example, in July 2014 company Boeing and the largest producer of titanium in the world, the Russian company AVISMA, extended their long-standing cooperation to 2022. Boeing gets 40% of its raw materials for production of hydraulic systems and landing gear from Avisma.
The United States is prepared to suspend new Cold War with Russia when it suits them. However, German corporations are under double pressure: they must cope with the consequences of sanctions, on the one hand, and on the other with the process of re-orientation of the Kremlin to the East.
