World Cup 2018 stadiums

Russia is preparing a lot for the World Cup in 2018 year. We present you Russian stadiums which will host matches of the 2018 World Cup.

Volgograd Arena


It has been built on the site of the stadium “Tsentralniy”, which before the construction was leveled to the ground. The construction site in the district of Mamayev Kurgan and the working name “Arena Pobeda” is a tribute to the heroic defense of Stalingrad in the Great Patriotic War. Design capacity of the stadium is 45000 spectators. The “Volgograd Arena” will host the group matches of the World Championship.

Ekaterinburg Arena


This stadium is also reconstructing and it will become more comfortable and spacious, but at the same time it will preserve its historical facade. After reconstruction it will be able to accommodate 35000 spectators. The stadium is the home arena for the local football club “Ural”. The “Ekaterinburg Arena” will host the group matches of the World Championship.

Kazan Arena

The stadium was built shortly before the active preparations for the football World Cup. The stadium is designed for 45000 spectators. This is the home arena of the Kazan „Rubin“. The Universiade and the World Championship in Water Sports were held there. The “Kazan Arena” will host the games of the Confederations Cup in 2017 year, as well as group matches, one of the games of the 1/8 finals and one of the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Kaliningrad Stadium

One of the most “problematic” objects of the project. For a long time disputes did not cease regarding where the stadium should be built. The project has been repeatedly modified. This is a complex project because of unsteady soil where are used special piles. The stadium will hold 35000 spectators and after the competitions – 25000. The group matches of the 2018 World Cup will be held at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow

That is the main stadium in Russia which hosted the 1980 Olympics. For the world championship it will be once again reconstructed, thus the field falls downwards to increase tribunes (to 81000 spectator seats) and to bring them closer to the field. In the “Luzhniki” will be hold an opening match, three games of the group stage, one of the semifinals and the final of the tournament.

Spartak Stadium, Moscow

Before and after the 2018 World Cup, Spartak Stadium will be called the „Opening Arena“. The first match was held on September 5, 2014. The stadium was erected for the football club “Spartak” with the money of its president Leonid Fedun. The stadium is painted in red and white colors and looks like the Colosseum. Capacity – 45000 seats. Here will be games of the Confederations Cup in 2017 year, as well as group matches and one of the games of the 1/8 finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Nizhniy Novgorod Stadium


For this sport facility has been chosen the most beautiful place in the city, where the rivers Oka and Volga converge. Capacity – 45000 people. At the stadium “Nizhny Novgorod” there will be group matches, one of the games of the 1/8 finals and one of the quarter finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Rostov Arena, Rostov-on-Don

The stadium is being built in the picturesque place of the city – on the left bank of the Don river. The project was repeatedly reviewed and, as a result, was significantly simplified. During the World Cup, it will accommodate up to 45000 spectators. After that it will become the home arena of FC „Rostov“ with a capacity of 40000 seats. At the Rostov Arena will be hosted group matches of the World Cup, as well as one of the games of the 1/8 finals of the tournament.

Samara Arena


It is executed in the form of a “spheroid”. Capacity – 45000 spectators. After the World Cup the stadium will become the home arena of the Samara club “Wings of the Soviets”. At the “Samara Arena” there will be group matches, one of the games of the 1/8 finals and one of the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

St-Petersburg Stadium


One of the longest term construction stadiums of Russian football, the most expensive, modern and innovative stadium in Russia and one of those all over the world. General architect Kise Kurokawa has designed for this project a stadium equipped with a sliding roof and a rolling-out field. It will accommodate 69000 spectators. There will be games of the Confederations Cup in 2017, as well as group matches, one semi-final and a match for the 3rd place in the 2018 World Cup.

Mordovia Arena, Saransk


Construction of the stadium in Saransk began even before it became known that the city will host the 2018 World Cup matches. Nevertheless, construction was delayed. The project was altered. The capacity of the stadium will be 45000 seats and after the world championship will be reduced to 30000. On Mordovia Arena will be hold the group matches of the World Championship.

Stadium Fisht, Sochi


The stadium was erected for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Here was the opening and closing of games. The stadium holds 40000 spectators but after World Cup 2018 under the Heritage program, it will reduce the number of seats to 25000. Here will be games of the Confederations Cup in 2017 year, as well as group matches and one of the games of the 1/8 finals of the 2018 World Cup.
